This adventure and dare is perfectly captured on this coin called "Loop the Loop", named after a two-lane steel roller coaster that operated from 1901 to 1910 at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. The roller coaster was one of the first roller coaster loops in North America. It is the ancestor of all modern loop coasters, all of which use elliptical designs. It was considered revolutionary at the time because it reduced whiplash.
Despite the safer form, people still freaked out about Loop the Loop because it was still pretty primitive. These were the days before under-track safety mechanisms were invented to prevent the passenger cars from flying off the tracks. The passenger cars on Loop the Loop had real tires and the only thing keeping them on track was a small side rail. At least the drivers received a very nice souvenir ticket to remember the ride!
